Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore, Maryland, was named after Caecilius Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the first governor of the province. Baltimore experienced a massive growth spurt in the mid to late 18th century. It served as a granary for many other sugar colonies. It also served as a tobacco port of entry. Baltimore’s population grew due to the railroad which helped it become a major shipping and manufacturing center. Baltimore officially became its own city in 1851 separating itself from Baltimore County. Important historical events in Baltimore include the Great Baltimore Fire in 1904.
